Brainwaves | It's all in the way you think | April 2021

‘If your mind can conceive it, and your heart can believe it, you can achieve it.’ Jesse Jackson

Brainwaves has been changing lives by building confidence in the water for over 20 years. It is a privilege to be able to work with people who want to develop in the water at whatever level they are at. As well as performance athletes seeking to exploit the gains that improvement in technique and focus bring, I work with everyone including those that are learning from scratch.

According to Sport England swimming is Britain’s second favourite exercise after walking. Swimming can be enjoyed by people across all ages and abilities and is recognised as being uniquely beneficial to the nation’s health and well-being, with more than 11 million people taking the plunge each year and five and half million adults swimming at least once a month.

I fell in love with water when I was seven. On dipping under the water I felt that I had come home, feeling the water wrapping itself around me so comfortable, natural and wonderful. Enveloping me like an old favourite jumper. This is the reason I have chosen the Alexander Shaw method of teaching which encourages pupils to be part of the water, to develop good body alignment and incorporate breathing as a natural part of the whole stroke. Being at one with the water is achieved through understanding how to work with it. This way pupils discover the joy of being in it. To have a sense of calm and happiness. Mindfulness swimming rather than how many laps you need to do, because let’s face it the more enjoyable something is the more you will do anyway.

Regardless of age, the way someone thinks affects how he or she works not only within water but in everyday life. Working alongside a student can unravel these underlying fears and worries.

“Brainwaves has been changing lives by building confidence in the water for over 20 years. It’s from this insight into how people develop, that I’ve developed our new and exciting partner company ‘Just add water’. Using the advanced coaching techniques developed in the swim coaching world, I can show you how those same lessons will bring solid gains in your personal and professional life. So much of what we do is about influencing and mastering our environment. Water is as alien a place as you are likely to find yourself, and in our ever-changing world of doubt and uncertainty, it is no surprise that more of us are feeling out of our depth from time to time.

My sessions ideally incorporate pool time, where you are able to fully explore the boundaries of what your possibilities are. We then can consolidate with one on one coaching time on dry land. Even if you are a confident animal in the water, I can help you utilise that ability in translating it into other areas of your personal performance.

The first session is free, and from that we will develop a bespoke programme that is right for you.
