Supporting Local Charities: Spotlight on Culture Vannin | July 2024
16 July 2024
Charitable work is an excellent way to enhance your business's CSR while giving you and your team the "feel good" factor. Every month, Chamber Voice will highlight the propositions and projects of our individual charity members and educate you on how and why your business might choose to become a supporter. This month, we hear from the team at Culture Vannin.
About Culture Vannin
Culture Vannin supports, promotes, and advances Manx culture! We focus on innovative ways to make Manx culture accessible and relevant to different audiences within the community and online, both on the Island and around the world. Through a combination of development work and community awards, our reach extends to over 4 million views on YouTube and around 20,000 Facebook likes, something we are continually growing.
Our small but dedicated team focuses on the Manx language, music, dance, online and educational resources. We are involved in teaching, commissioning new projects, providing expert advice, and spreading the word. We make community awards for everything from festivals to publications, ecology, history, and heritage transport. Our work helps the Isle of Man become more confident and articulate in its sense of identity, making it a more attractive place to live, work, and visit.
Located at our cultural centre in St John’s, you'll find our offices, teaching spaces, and a small exhibition, meaning it’s in use throughout the week, during evenings, and at weekends. Culture Vannin is a registered charity (333) under its full name, the Manx Heritage Foundation.
Current Projects
- Community Development Work: We offer music and dance workshops in schools and the community, teach adults Manx, and create, publish, and commission. We aim to extend our offering by developing a new teaching space to enable more engagement, teaching, performances, etc., and are looking to identify sponsors.
- Sustainability: We are working on making our cultural centre more sustainable and energy-efficient. We would love to learn from businesses that have already achieved this and those who can support us in realizing our goals.
- Celebrating Manx Language: We are planning a Year of the Manx Language in 2026 with Jeebin (Manx Language Network). As a successfully revitalized language, Manx has a huge media reach internationally and inter-generational impact. We will need support for a part-time coordinator, event sponsors, and to bring Manx into new spaces.
How Can Chamber Members Help?
We appreciate that many charities lack the resources or skills needed to market themselves, run social media platforms, or carry out functions such as HR or accounting. If any Chamber members wish to support our charity by offering some time, we would be grateful for:
- Consultation: Time to discuss ideas and experiences related to Manx culture. Could you help with the Year of the Manx Language in 2026?
- SEO Expertise: Assistance with SEO for our suite of websites.
- Professional Services: Identifying our next external auditors.
Additional Support from the Business Community
- Integrate Manx Culture: Use our free translation service, Manx music, or other creatives in your films, products, and events. We’re here to help.
- Community Grants: Consider developing community grants for Manx culture. We’d be happy to partner with you to create something with real community impact.
- Donations and Legacies: We always welcome donations and legacies to extend the reach of our work with the community.
