Manx Telecom Honours Community Champions at 'It's Our Community Awards' Ceremony

12 February 2024

Manx Telecom hosted its annual 'It's Our Community Awards' presentation event at the Manx Telecom Headquarters this week. The evening, presided over by Gary Lamb, CEO of Manx Telecom and Minister Tim Johnston, not only recognised outstanding community contributions but also highlighted the pressing issues faced by charities and voluntary organisations.

In a climate where challenges persist for charitable entities and the public alike, the 'It's Our Community Awards' continue to be a source of inspiration and support for those dedicated to making a positive impact on the Isle of Man.

Gary Lamb, CEO of Manx Telecom, expressed his heartfelt sentiments during the 'It's Our Community Awards' presentation event, stating, "Tonight, we come together to celebrate the remarkable individuals and organisations that form the backbone of our community. In a world facing unprecedented challenges, the resilience and dedication displayed by these community champions is truly inspiring."

He went on to acknowledge the increase in mental health-related applications, emphasising, "The growing awareness and concern for mental health within our community are evident, and it reinforces the importance of the initiatives supported by the 'It's Our Community Awards.' We stand united in our commitment to fostering a community that is not only safer and happier but also more inclusive."

A poignant moment during the evening was the heartfelt tribute to Marg McGee, the driving force behind the 'It's Our Community Scheme' for many years. Marg passionately advocated for the awards to support smaller charities striving for funding for essential community initiatives. Sadly, Marg McGee, a cherished colleague at Manx Telecom, passed away last year, filling this year's awards with a bittersweet sentiment.

In honour of Marg's unwavering dedication and profound understanding of the Island's charities and organisations, Manx Telecom announced the renaming of the 'It's Our Community Awards' to 'The Marg McGee Community Awards.' The official relaunch is scheduled for later in 2024 when the awards reopen for applications with organisations of all sizes encouraged to apply.

Reflecting on the legacy of Marg McGee, Gary Lamb shared, "Marg was a driving force behind these awards, passionately advocating for the smaller charities striving to make a difference. Her absence is deeply felt, but her spirit lives on in the very essence of these awards."

Announcing the renaming of the awards in Marg McGee's honour, Gary stated, "The Marg McGee Community Awards will carry forward her legacy, a legacy of community service and dedication to making the Isle of Man a better place for all. We look forward to relaunching these awards later in 2024, and we are committed to ensuring that Marg's vision continues to shine brightly."

This year's application round saw an impressive 60 applications, showcasing the continued commitment of the community to instigate positive change. Gary Lamb expressed his delight at the substantial support received for the diverse range of projects and organisations, extending heartfelt thanks on behalf of Manx Telecom and the broader Manx community, to everyone involved.
