In response to the latest announcement on revised minimum wage proposals, Chamber sent the following email and document to all Tynwald members. Chamber also issued the following media statement.
White Paper
Dear All Tynwald Members
I am writing to you regarding the Department for Enterprise’s revised Minimum Wage proposals announced on February 4th.
Chamber raised significant concerns about the potential impact of the original proposals on businesses and their employees. We therefore welcome the decision to defer the October 2025 increase, as well as the commitment to prioritising a review of the methodology used for determining Minimum Wage proposals and their link to the Living Wage. Chamber would appreciate the opportunity to contribute to this review which is scheduled to be presented to Tynwald in July.
On behalf of our members, we welcome the collaborative effort which has led to these revised proposals and hope that they are approved by Tynwald. However, while this would be a step in the right direction, we view it as a short-term fix to a long-term problem. Looking ahead, we encourage Government to explore alternative approaches to supporting lower-paid workers, such as increasing tax thresholds which would enhance take-home pay while easing some of the financial pressure on businesses.
Before the revised Minimum Wage proposals were announced, Chamber prepared the following White Paper which may be of interest. It’s the result of our active engagement with local businesses since the original proposals were announced. While yesterday’s announcement has preceded the issuing of our paper, we believe it remains valuable because it highlights the business community’s key concerns and potential solutions.
