Charity Member Spotlight: Sight Matters

Sight Matters, the trading arm of Manx Blind Welfare Society is 90 this year.  It is the only charity on the island that supports the blind and visually impaired.

They have just under 800 members, children and adults, and provide a wide range of services, including assistive technology and equipment, aids to support independent living, a younger members group, a lunch club, an audio library, talking news and numerous activities for the over 18’s which include a walking group, community based activities, various social outings and an acoustic shooting club.

They provide orientation and mobility training which includes teaching how to use a long (white) cane.

They offer visual impairment awareness training, work place assessments and if technology or equipment is identified that would help in the workplace, provide it.  They can prepare documents in accessible formats, including braille.  These, as with all their services, are free of charge.

The charity is independently funded, relying on securing the £1,000,000 a year needed to run our different services through fundraising, donations, legacies, investment income and applications to grants and trusts. They are proud that their services are available to all that need them and free at the point of delivery.
