Funding sought during busy season for Manx Wildlife Trust seal monitoring and rescue work

24 October 2023

Manx Wildlife Trust has launched an appeal to raise £50,000 for its marine conservation work. The
appeal coincides with start of a busy time for the Manx Wildlife Trust marine team and volunteers as
the pupping season of our iconic Atlantic Grey Seal gets underway. Crews of specially trained
volunteers have already been mobilised to monitor many lone seal pups and undertake several
highly skilled rescues.

Dr Lara Howe, Marine Conservation Officer says;

“More than 80% of Isle of Man territory is marine and wildlife in the Irish Sea is in decline. The money we raise through this appeal will fund urgent research, restoration and conservation projects that will benefit all sea life, including some of our best loved species like the grey seal. Manx Wildlife Trust is hoping for local businesses and donors to get behind the appeal by fundraising donating and spreading the word.”

Manx Wildlife Trust reminds the public that if they see a seal on the beach, to keep dogs on a lead,
keep their distance and not to try and encourage the seal back into the sea. Pups needs to rest and
the mother is likely to be close by. Concerns can be reported to Manx Wildlife Trust. £100 could provide care and food for an injured or sick seal for a week at Manx Wildlife Trust’s seal rehabilitation centre.
