How can Offshore Wind Create Long-term Economic Benefits for the Isle of Man?

As the Island considers how to strengthen its economy for the 2030s and beyond, renewable energy is now part of the conversation. Offshore wind has already delivered significant investment and economic activity across the UK, particularly in coastal communities, so proposals for Ørsted’s Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm raise the possibility of the Isle of Man gaining long-term benefits too.
At the centre of Ørsted’s proposals are revenues that would boost the Island’s economy by approximately £2billion over the wind farm’s 35-year operational lifetime. These financial benefits would be from taxation and seabed rental revenues paid directly to Isle of Man Treasury, plus an independently administered Community Investment Fund designed to support projects and initiatives selected for the benefit of the local community.
The approximately £2 billion sum would equate to an average of around £50 million to £60 million each year, so it would be a new revenue stream comparable with several established sectors of the Island’s economy. All these financial benefits would require no direct investment or subsidy from the Isle of Man Government and there would be no capital or operational expenditure risk to the Government or taxpayers. However, says Mooir Vannin Project Director Jamie Baldwin, it’s also important to note other factors that would provide more long-term economic benefits. He points out that Ørsted’s experience of building and operating 12 offshore wind farms in UK waters, including six in the Irish Sea, shows how offshore wind investment can be a catalyst for wider economic activity. He said: “In the UK, offshore wind has been associated with sustained investment in ports, manufacturing and services, particularly in coastal regions. Where we have operational offshore wind farms, we have seen it revitalise coastal communities and stimulate long-term investment. In this context Mooir Vannin presents a unique, once-in-a-generation opportunity for the Isle of Man to support a project that is both environmentally responsible and economically transformative.”
Jobs, skills and supply chain opportunities
Ørsted is proposing an Operations & Maintenance base on the Island which would support skilled employment over the wind farm’s operational lifetime. Potential roles could include engineering, marine operations and port services, while businesses across the Island may also be able to participate in the wider project supply chain. For the Isle of Man, the opportunity would therefore include not only employment directly associated with the wind farm, but the potential development of local expertise, services and supply chain capability around a growing international industry.
Power to the Island options
Mooir Vannin would generate much more electricity than the Isle of Man could consume on its own. Offshore wind farms need to operate at significant scale to be commercially viable, meaning the majority of the electricity generated by the project would be exported to the UK grid. However, the Isle of Man could also gain energy security benefits via one of two options that Ørsted has put forward. Baldwin explains: “The first is via a new electrical cable directly between the wind farm and the electricity grid here on the Island. The second is to connect the wind farm solely to the UK grid, with the option for the Island to buy a proportion of the power it generates at cheaper than wholesale prices.”
Ørsted has been progressing both possibilities voluntarily, although Baldwin stresses that the eventual decision on the preferred route would rest with Isle of Man Government and Manx Utilities.
A rapidly developing technology
The offshore wind sector has changed considerably over the past three decades, with larger and more productive turbines allowing projects to generate substantially more energy. “Wind energy technology is developing rapidly,” says Baldwin. “Today, a single offshore wind turbine rotation generates enough electricity to power a UK home for 24 hours.” The difference becomes clearer when compared with Ørsted’s Vindeby project in Denmark, the world’s first offshore wind farm, which became operational 35 years ago. “Turbines today are almost 18 times more powerful,” Baldwin adds. “That gives an indication of the pace of innovation that’s happening in the industry, and a sense of the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for Mooir Vannin as wind turbine technology continues to develop.”
Wind is also playing a growing role in the wider UK energy system. Figures from the National Energy System Operator showed that in 2025, wind generated more electricity than gas in the UK for the first time. Across Europe, offshore wind is increasingly forming part of long-term energy security and economic strategies. Commitments under the Clean Energy Security Pact include ambitions to deliver up to 100GW of offshore wind capacity in the North Sea by 2050, reflecting the growing focus on domestic, low-carbon sources of power alongside economic development.
Mooir Vannin is currently expected to become operational in the first half of the 2030s. With an anticipated operating life of around 35 years, the project could continue generating renewable electricity into the 2060s. Baldwin says this longevity is an important part of the opportunity: offshore wind is already a proven and scalable technology rather than a distant prospect. As with any infrastructure development of this scale, the economic case must be considered alongside environmental, technical and societal factors. These issues form part of the independent Examination process which began in March and concludes in September. However, the combination of long-term revenue, potential employment, supply chain development and access to renewable energy means offshore wind is increasingly being considered as more than an energy project alone. For the Isle of Man, says Baldwin, Mooir Vannin could represent a significant long-term economic opportunity extending well beyond the construction of the wind farm itself.
