Mountain View's New Wildflower Meadow Blossoms into a Haven for Nature and Wellbeing
Mountain View Innovation Centre, the 25-acre headquarters of AFD Software Ltd – The Postcode People – is celebrating the success of its stunning new wildflower meadow, a vibrant transformation that has turned an underused area of the site into a flourishing haven for wildlife, pollinators and people alike.
The project, led by Head Gardener Ben Richards, has been months in the making, requiring careful planning, patience and plenty of perseverance.
What was once an underused section of grassland has been thoughtfully transformed into a colourful wildflower meadow featuring a beautiful mix of UK native annual species, including Field Poppies, Cornflowers, Corn Marigolds, Field Forget-me-nots, Field Pansies and Corn Chamomile. The display now provides a rich source of nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects, helping to support local biodiversity while creating a spectacular burst of colour across the site.
The meadow is also proving invaluable for the site's resident honey bees. Mountain View provides a home to several beehives for local beekeeper Steve Bassil, and the abundance of nectar-rich flowers is providing a welcome new food source for the colonies. The increase in flowering plants not only benefits the bees living on site but also supports the wider network of pollinators that play such a vital role in the local ecosystem.
The journey to create the meadow was far from straightforward. Ben first marked out and measured the area before mowing, cultivating and carefully preparing the ground. After an initial spray treatment, the land was cultivated again, only for weeks of relentless rain to halt progress. Once the weather finally improved, the ground had to be re-cultivated before the seed could eventually be sown.
The result has exceeded expectations.
The meadow has quickly become a favourite spot for colleagues, resident businesses and Mountain View members, offering a peaceful place to pause, reflect and reconnect with nature during the working day.
Head Gardener Ben Richards said:
"This has been a real labour of love. It's fantastic to see an area that wasn't really being used transformed into something that's full of colour and wildlife. There were definitely a few challenges along the way – especially with all the rain – but seeing it in full bloom has made it all worthwhile. The best part has been hearing how much people are enjoying it. Whether it's colleagues taking a few minutes out of their day, members stopping to admire the flowers, or knowing we're providing a valuable food source for our on-site bees and other pollinators, it's great to feel we've created something that benefits both people and nature."
The meadow is already attracting an abundance of wildlife, with bees and butterflies regularly seen feeding among the flowers. Set alongside the banks of the Sulby River, the area offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can also enjoy the sight of ducks and geese on the water, creating a haven for both nature and wellbeing.
Mountain View member Florence has become one of the meadow's biggest fans.
"I find it so relaxing to sit down there. Watching the hares frolic through the grass while the butterflies dance among the flowers is incredibly peaceful. It's become one of my favourite places to spend a few quiet minutes during the day."
With Babbage's Bistro, the on-site café, due to reopen following its brief summer hiatus, patrons will once again be able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings that make Mountain View such a unique destination. After lunch or coffee, visitors can take a stroll along the network of footpaths that weave through the 25-acre site, admiring the vibrant wildflower meadow alongside the collection of sculptures already positioned around the grounds, creating a peaceful setting in which to relax and reconnect with nature.
